Superintendent Messages to Parents:

January 5, 2021

On behalf of the Patterson Joint Unified School District staff and our Board of Trustees, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!

2020 was a particularly difficult year for all of us, and we look forward to better times for our students, staff, and all our friends and family.  As you are aware, our district has worked collaboratively with county public health to monitor and mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus so that we may safely reopen our schools to in-person instruction for our children as soon as possible.

Currently, only grades TK-2 are attending classes on campus under a blended learning model in stable small group cohorts.  We had hoped to bring back grades 3-5 on January 19th.  Unfortunately, due to the increase in COVID-19 cases within Stanislaus County, county public health has directed that no additional classes will return until local conditions improve.  This applies to all schools in Stanislaus County.

District superintendents in Stanislaus County continue to meet regularly with county public health officials, and we will notify parents of any changes in these requirements as soon as information becomes available.  We also recognize that after ten months of “distance learning”, it is disappointing for everyone that students cannot come back to school sooner.  However, our staff is committed to providing your children the best educational opportunities possible under these difficult circumstances.

Our district is proud of the fact that we were well-positioned to provide distance learning with Chromebooks available for every student and an infrastructure to support remote instruction.  Additionally, we are the FIRST district in the State of California to provide free internet access through the deployment of “hot-spots” to rural areas in our district lacking access and the recent installation of LTE towers on all of our campuses.

As an educational community, we will continue the implementation effective practices to mitigate and control the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases so that students and staff may return to a safe and health learning environment as quickly as possible.  In the meantime, we ask all families to continue practicing social distancing, masking, and good hygiene to help get our children back in school.

If you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19 or experiencing symptoms consistent with infection, please self-quarantine and get tested as soon as possible.  Free mobile testing is now available in Patterson every Monday by appointment at the Hammon Senior Center.  Additional testing locations and related services are posted on our website.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding.  We will continue to do everything we can to support our students, staff, and families.

Sincerely,

Dr. Philip M. Alfano, Superintendent
